Warhammer Fantasy Battle features a mythology similar to that of Tolkien or classical fantasy and includes factions such as Orcs, Elves, Dark Elves, Men of the Empire, Lizardmen, Skaven (steampunk rat men), Beastmen, Chaos forces, Demons, Vampires, and Dwarfs. Warhammer Fantasy Battle is set in a fictional medieval world in which the forces of Chaos battle the forces of order. The content is usually split equally between Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Fantasy Battle sections, with a smaller section concerning either Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit table top battle games. White Dwarf magazines are released monthly. In the mid-1980s the magazine became solely focussed on Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Warhammer 40K. Early editions of the magazine may feature a range of articles concerning role playing games such as Traveller, Rune Quest and Dungeons and Dragons. White Dwarf magazines feature battle reviews, playable scenarios, original fictional content and short stories, images of newly released models, and faction painting guides. Warhammer is a strategy game in which players set armies of painted models against one another. Warhammer White Dwarf is the leading magazine for Games Workshop's table top battle games.
